Veterans Memorial coming to Merryville

The Leesville Daily Leader - 1/19/2018

Jan. 19--"Once we get enough bricks we will start out with a patio around the Veterans Monument we have on the grounds," Historical Society Member Renee Corbett said. "If we keep receiving the bricks after that is complete we will start extending the bricks out as a walking path to the cornerstone of the property."

The idea for the Veterans Memorial first came up in November.

The bricks are meant to honor any U.S. Army veteran from anywhere in the country, both living and deceased. Bricks can be purchased for $25 from any member of the Historical Society or through PayPal on the Merryville Museum website.

"We want to honor those who serve our country and have served in the past," Corbett said. "They have sacrificed so much for us, so we want to honor them. Our hope is that we can have our first dedication ceremony during the Merryville Heritage Festival coming up in March."

Merryville Alderman Dale Reinhart said that although he and his family are not originally from Louisiana he would be purchasing bricks to honor members of his family.

"My father served in the military, and so did my son," Reinhart said. "I will be buying bricks to honor them.

"I've noticed there are strong ties to the military in this community. There are many people living here who have served, or know someone who has."

Founded in 1981, the Merryville Museum features information, artifacts, and memorabilia pertinent to the history of Merryville, Beauregard Parish, Southwest Louisiana and Southeast Texas. For more information, log on to merryvillemuseum.com, or call Renee Corbett at 337-396-3467.
